The Pros and Cons of Wet and Dry Carpet Cleaning Methods

Carpet Cleaning-Wet (steam cleaning) vs Dry Cleaning (VLM Very Low Moisture)

When it comes to cleaning your wall-to-wall carpets, you may be wondering: "Wet or dry cleaning, which is the way to go?" Well, the answer may surprise you (or not), but it really depends on a variety of factors such as the fiber content and condition of your carpet. But let's be honest, what's the real reason you're here? You just want to know which method is going to leave your carpets looking and smelling the freshest, right?

Well, here's the thing, both wet and dry cleaning methods have their pros and cons. For example, wet cleaning is great for getting deep down into the fibers and lifting out stubborn dirt and stains. But let's be real, it can also leave your carpets feeling a bit like a soggy noodle. On the other hand, dry cleaning uses less moisture, so your carpets dry faster, but it may not be as effective at removing heavy soiling.

So, here's a little tip, if you have a high-traffic area or a particularly dirty spot that just won't budge, wet cleaning may be the way to go. But if you're looking for a quick refresh, and don't mind a little dirt hiding in the depths of your carpet

Is One The Best?

Wet Method (Steam Cleaning)

In the past, carpet shampooing was the go-to method, but let's just say it was about as effective as a squirt gun in a hurricane. Not only that, but it would leave a shampoo residue that would attract dirt like a magnet. So, you ended up with a carpet that looked dirtier than before you cleaned it. But don't worry, times have changed, and today, we have something even better: truck-mounted steam cleaning systems.

Carpet manufacturers are in agreement that the steam cleaning or hot water extraction method is the most effective at removing deep-down dirt from carpet pile. This method, when performed properly, will not leave a residue, and it won't make your carpet look worse than before you started cleaning it.

Now, the downside to the wet method is the relatively long drying time. But, if done correctly and with quality equipment and know-how, your carpet should be damp to the touch when the technician leaves, and mostly dry within 5 to 8 hours, depending on the temperature outside and inside. And, if you're in a rush, booties can be offered to put over shoes, so you can use the carpet sooner.

Additionally, In some cases, it is possible to wet clean the carpet using a low moisture method, which can significantly decrease drying time. But beware, anything smaller than a truck-mounted unit, such as a portable cleaner or a carpet shampooer rented from a store, just won't cut it. They often use too much soap, leaving a residue and don't have a strong enough vacuum to pull out most of the water, which will extend the drying time, and maybe even cause moisture problems like mold and mildew.

Dry Method (VLM Very Low Moisture)

The dry cleaning method uses solutions and dry compounds to attract and absorb dirt and grime, making it less labor-intensive and faster than wet cleaning. But, as they say, "fast and easy doesn't always mean good."

One method, low moisture foaming system separates the dirt from the carpet fibers, and uses a powerful vacuum to remove both the dirt and the solution. Another method uses a dry cleaning compound which is spread on the carpet to absorb the dirt and then vacuumed up. But, before you get too excited, remember, this method may leave a residue in the carpet, and after several dry compound cleanings, another process may be required to eliminate the residue.

So, you may be thinking, "well, at least there's no long drying time." And you're right, but dry cleaning is never as effective as wet cleaning when it comes to removing deep-down dirt and stains in the carpet pile.

However, if you're in a bind, dry cleaning may be the way to go. For example, it's an excellent choice for cleaning area rugs when water should be avoided, such as silk or rayon rugs, or for very fragile rugs. And let's not forget, if you're living in a skyscraper or your commercial building is located on the moon, where there's no water, the dry cleaning method is the only possible option.

Dry Method and Wet Used Together

Occasionally, when spots and spills reappear after a professional carpet steam cleaning, wet vs dry cleaning becomes wet followed by a dry cleaning method. This is because a carpet acts like a 'wick' and any spills still under the surface can 'wick' up. When this phenomenon appears, a dry method can be used which involves lightly buffing the area with a dry cleaning solution to remove the stain from the surface.

Steam Cleaning vs VLM Summary

The wet method (specifically professional truck-mounted carpet cleaning) is the best choice for heavily soiled and heavily trafficked areas. If drying time is of the essence, the dry cleaning method may be preferable, especially in an office situation.

If dry cleaning will not suffice, professional carpet cleaning companies can clean with low moisture, significantly lowering the amount of time needed to dry the carpets.

Occasionally, wet cleaning may initially remove stubborn spots and spills but they may reappear after the carpet has dried. In this case, a dry cleaning method can be used after the carpet has dried to eliminate the spot that has wicked to the surface.
